Jaap Jongbloed gaat in de eerste aflevering op zoek naar Irene. Als dochter van de onmogelijke liefde tussen een Nederlandse priester en een Ghanees meisje, groeit zij in de jaren 70 en 80 op tussen haar blanke klasgenootjes in Leiden. Buiten een exotische verschijning is zij een oogverblindende schoonheid, die menigeen doet denken aan supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Ze is populair bij de jongens, maar niet bij alle meiden. Na haar schooltijd lacht het leven haar tegemoet en haar geluk wordt bekroond met de geboorte van een zoon. Tot zij wordt getroffen door borstkanker en niets meer hetzelfde zal zijn...
